Men are famously tight lipped about their holiday wish lists, but our Gifts.com survey got the scoop …

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwired - Nov 6, 2013) - After surveying more than 1,000 men about their gift preferences, online gift recommendation site Gifts.com is pulling back the curtain on what men want when it comes to receiving gifts. The answer was surprising: Anything, ordered with a side of sensitivity.

Gifts.com elected to survey men, in particular, because many gift givers feel lost and anxious when buying for their husband, boyfriend, dad, friend, colleague or relative. "People get intimidated buying for the men in their lives and worry that a holiday gift has to be exactly what he wants," said Kathryn Drury Wagner, senior content manager at Gifts.com. "What this survey reveals is that in general, men don't often share what they want but aren't disappointed when they receive something that's not on their mental list. That means that there is more flexibility in buying for the men in our lives and more opportunity for creative or unexpected gift buying than we thought."

Heightened Sensitivity
Shoppers tend to feel unnecessarily anxious about shopping for men because they believe that men know exactly what gifts they want but aren't sharing the information. The Gifts.com survey shows that male gift recipients are more appreciative and open about what they receive than expected:

  • Thirty-eight percent of respondents don't share what they want, despite keeping mental lists, with 55 percent citing the reason of not wanting anyone to feel obligated to make a purchase for them.
  • Upwards of 50 percent shrug it off when they receive a gift they didn't want, noting that they aren't disappointed by gifts that miss the mark.
  • Manners matter, with a whopping 80 percent of respondents noting that they express gratitude and thanks when receiving any gift, even those they don't want or like.

Creative Gift Giving
When asked about their dream gifts, responses ranged from an Audi A8 to a new laptop to laser eye surgery for a loved one. When combined with the fact that the majority of respondents didn't openly share what they do want, opportunity abounds to get creative and adventurous with gift ideas:

  • Almost 39 percent of respondents said they enjoyed being surprised by gifts.
  • About 43 percent will request some form of media (books, music, movies) during Holiday 2013, while 35 percent want tools and an impressive 25 percent hope to find practical fashion such as socks, ties or underwear inside a gift box. This broad range shows that there isn't a defined gift giving option, leaving the door open for unique or unexpected presents.
  • Nearly 44 percent wouldn't be bothered if their family didn't exchange gifts at all during the holiday season, which means giving one larger gift as a family present, or even a charity donation, may be completely acceptable to men.

The survey was created by Gifts.com to get a firmer understanding of what matters to men in terms of gifts. More than 1,000 men above the age of 25 participated. Of the respondents, the majority were between the ages of 30 and 44 (45 percent), had children (63 percent), received some level of higher education (36 percent) had an associate's or bachelor's degree and had a household income of between $50,000 and $100,000 (37 percent).
