An early spike in the price of oil was short-lived on Monday, as optimism about a strong manufacturing report from China gave way to worries here at home.
On the New York Mercantile Exchange:
Benchmark crude finished up 18 cents at $89.09.
Heating oil fell less than a penny to end at $3.06 a gallon
Natural gas rose 3 cents to $3.59 per 1,000 cubic feet
Wholesale gasoline lost less than a penny to $2.73 a gallon.
On the ICE Futures Exchange in London:
Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell 31 cents to $110.32.
