Global Small-Cap ex-US & Oil: Two ETFs Trading with Outsized Volume

In the past trading session, U.S. stocks were mixed, though the key U.S. indices regained the ground lost at the start of last week. Overall, pressure in the Chinese market, an unexpected surge in oil price and recovery in the U.S. market especially after a stronger-than-expected Q2 GDP data (revised) set the backdrop for yesterday’s trading. For the top ETFs, investors saw SPY  gain about 0.1%, DIA lose about 0.01% and QQQ move higher by more than 0.3% on the day.

Two more specialized ETFs are worth noting in particular though as both saw trading volume that was far outside of normal. In fact, both these funds experienced volume levels that were more than double their average for the most recent trading session. This could make these ETFs ones to watch in the days ahead to see if this trend of extra-interest continues:

VSS: Volume 3.55 times average

This all-world small-cap ex-U.S. ETF was in focus yesterday as roughly 522,374 shares moved hands compared with an average of roughly 153,498 shares. We also saw some stock price movement as shares of VSS lost about 0.5% yesterday.

The move was possibly the result of global growth worries. For the month, VSS is down about 5.7% and has a Zacks ETF Rank #3 (Hold) with a Medium risk outlook.

USO: Volume 3.12 times average

This oil ETF was under the microscope yesterday as nearly 68.7 million shares moved hands. This compares to an average trading day of 21.99 million shares and came as USO gained over 6.7% on the session.

The movement can largely be attributed to the sudden rebound in oil prices which staged the biggest one-day rally in over six years on Thursday and extended the staggering gain on Friday. As a result, the climb in USO is self-explanatory. USO was down about 8.4% in the past one-month period.
