DETROIT (AP) -- A groundbreaking has been held for the first major shopping center in Detroit in years.
Mayor Dave Bing and Gov. Rick Snyder attended Thursday afternoon's ceremony for Gateway Marketplace at Woodward Avenue and Eight Mile Road.
The center will be anchored by a Meijer Supercenter, a Marshalls department store and a K&G Fashion Superstore. It is expected to feature 350,000 square feet of retail space and will be built on 36 acres of land.
About 900 permanent retail jobs and 300 construction positions will be created.
The shopping center is expected to attract people from the city and surrounding suburbs.
The groundbreaking was the second this week for retail developments. Work has started on a Whole Foods Market in the city's Midtown area which is scheduled to open in 2013.
