WASHINGTON (AP) -- Environmental and watchdog groups are preparing to sue to block construction of two nuclear reactors in eastern Georgia that would be the nation's first built-from-scratch nuclear power plant in a generation.

The groups say the plant should be blocked until federal regulators approve safety changes prompted by last year's nuclear disaster in Japan.

Twelve groups, including the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, say they prepared the suit Thursday and expect it to be filed no later than Friday in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission voted 4-1 last week to issue a permit to Atlanta-based Southern Co. to build and operate two new reactors at its Plant Vogtle site south of Augusta.

The NRC last approved construction of a nuclear plant in 1978.

odds of a tsunami in georgia are pretty high. The IQ's of the protesters, however, are a different story. Strange thing though, I lived in Ga for a couple of years and those people are not dumb. (but they are very nice) Think we might have some outside influence here.

    Lee,

A tsunami is possible in Georgia, but it would be triggered by an undersea landslide not an earthquake. The Canary Islands are the most likely source.

Somehow the possibility that Westinghouse and Southern Company have ignored this or another earthquake in Charleston SC seems highly unlikely.

I would say that this suit is the work of environmental subversives and NIMBYs who protest everything just on account.

Guess who the first to complain when the power goes off will be?
Tsunami's in Ga. are not real likely, IMO.
