Harper Government Honours Fallen RCMP Members at National Memorial Service

REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwired - Sep 14, 2014) - Public Safety Canada

Roxanne James, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today attended the RCMP National Memorial Service at "Depot" Division in Regina, Saskatchewan. Ms. James was joined by Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield, RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson and other dignitaries in laying wreaths at the RCMP Cenotaph.

The RCMP National Memorial Service is an annual event to honour RCMP members who died in the line of duty since the first fallen member in 1876. This year the names of the three officers tragically killed in the June shootings in Moncton were added to the Memorial Wall: Constable Fabrice Georges Gevaudan, Constable Douglas James Larche and Constable Dave Joseph Ross. The names of all 234 fallen officers on the Honour Roll were read.

Quotes

"Police officers have the incredibly important role of keeping Canadians safe. Sadly, each year officers make the ultimate sacrifice in carrying out their duties - leaving a huge void in the lives of their families and fellow officers. Today we honour all RCMP officers who have died in the line of duty and offer our thoughts and prayers to loved ones and families who have faced such a difficult loss"

- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness

"Today I had the sad privilege of helping recognize the three RCMP officers who gave their lives in helping protect their fellow citizens in Moncton this past June. This was a shocking event that helped remind all of us of the risks our officers face each day while on duty. It highlights the importance of their work and of taking the time to honour all fallen police officers."
