YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES--(Marketwire - Feb 19, 2013) - The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council today announced an investment that will develop labour and business capacity in the Tlicho Region of the Northwest Territories.
"The Government of Canada is proud to invest in training for northern workers so they can take advantage of job opportunities in their communities," said Minister Aglukkaq. "This investment will give businesses greater opportunities to hire skilled workers locally, and help Northerners secure jobs in important sectors that contribute to Northern economic growth."
CanNor''s investment of $450,000 will support the purchase of a mobile crusher for the Crusher Operator Training Program operated by the Tlicho Learning and Development Centre. The program has been offered in Behchoko, and with the addition of a mobile crusher, the training program becomes mobile and available in each of the Tlicho communities. The program has had a positive economic impact in the region by providing training opportunities and supplying crushed materials for local market. The addition of a mobile crusher is expected to double the number of trainees over the next three years.
Investment in this project is made possible through CanNor''s Community Economic Opportunities Program (CEOP), part of the Aboriginal Economic Development (AED) suite of programs. The CEOP provides project-based support to Aboriginal communities for community economic development.
