Harrington College of Design, a leading provider of design education in Chicago, is pleased to announce Max S. Shangle as the institution’s new president. Shangle joins Harrington from Kendall College of Art and Design at Ferris State University in Grand Rapids, Mich., where his 30-year tenure just concluded as Dean of the College and Chief Academic Officer.
"Our Board is confident that Max Shangle’s success as a visionary academic leader combined with his professional training as a designer and his exceptional record of business and civic involvement in the local community is the perfect fit for the future of our great and growing institution,” said Harrington College of Design Board Chair Mitchell M. Obstfeld. “The entire Board of Trustees is firmly convinced that he’s the leader with the energy and the skills to extend our vision for Harrington College of Design."
Shangle’s Kendall College career included a variety of different administrative and instructional roles, including serving as the Department Chair of the Furniture Design Program. He brings with him experience developing new academic programs, designing scholarship programs with industry partners and leading complex reaccreditation processes.
A leader in the furniture industry, Shangle often serves on design competition juries, including the Pinnacle Awards for American Society of Furniture Designers. He continues to serve occasionally as an expert witness in product liability and design infringement cases involving furniture products.
“I’m looking forward to helping Harrington College of Design forge strong partnerships while advancing its effectiveness and reputation in ways that will lead to its placement at the forefront of the arts and design community, while impacting those the college’s work touches,” said Shangle.
