HCA profit hurt by legal costs

The owner of 163 hospitals had EPS of 92 cents in Q4, 2% down from last year but beating estimates by 10 cents. Sales climbed 13% to $9.54 bil, topping forecasts of $8.99 bil. HCA Holdings (HCA) is appealing a ruling in which a Mo. judge ordered it to pay a charitable foundation for failing to spend enough money on capital improvements at Kansas City-area nonprofit hospitals it acquired. HCA set aside $175 mil for legal and other costs related to the legal activity during the quarter. Shares fell 0.3% to 37.51.
