Health Catalyst Congratulates Larry Grandia on Winning the Utah Governor's Medal in Science and Technology

Former Intermountain HealthCare CIO Lauded as a Healthcare IT Pioneer

SALT LAKE CITY, UT--(Marketwired - Dec 16, 2013) - Health Catalyst, the leader in healthcare data warehousing and analytics, today congratulated Larry Grandia on winning the 2013 Utah Governor's Medal in Science and Technology, awarded by Governor Gary R. Herbert and the State Science Advisor, Dr. Carol Lynn George, along with the State Advisory Council on Science and Technology.

Grandia, a Health Catalyst board member, helped expand the early systems at Salt Lake City's LDS Hospital into a critical infrastructure supporting world-class patient care that became an industry model for high-quality, low-cost care. During his 28 years as IT leader and CIO at Intermountain HealthCare, more than 20 Intermountain hospitals implemented strong financial, administrative and clinical health IT systems, establishing a foundation for coordinated care that has made Intermountain one of the most admired health systems in the nation.

Now retired, Grandia continues to apply his expertise to improving the quality of healthcare in Utah and nationally. He is a frequent healthcare industry speaker and a fellow of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), which earlier this year awarded him the prestigious Industry Leader Award, as well as a fellow, lifetime member and past board member of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).

Grandia has served on the board of Health Catalyst since 2011.

Gov. Herbert will award the Governor's Medals to Grandia and six other individuals in an awards ceremony in the Leonardo Museum, Salt Lake City, on January 15, 2014.

"Advances in science and technology play a huge role in keeping Utah dynamic and competitive," said Gov. Herbert in a press release. "On behalf of the State of Utah, I commend these individuals for their work in their respective fields and thank them for their contributions to this great State."

"It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by Governor Herbert for helping to implement the technologies that assisted Intermountain Healthcare in both becoming a catalyst for health and well-being in Utah and in becoming a recognized healthcare model for our nation, said Grandia. "This personal recognition is a reflection of the remarkable healthcare technology talent that exists in Utah. Their dedication has both improved the quality of life in our state and has contributed significantly to Utah's growing economy. I am very proud of the hundreds of Utah healthcare technologists I have been privileged to work with and share this honor with them."

Health Catalyst CEO Dan Burton said of Grandia, "Larry is one of the most successful healthcare CIOs in the history of healthcare IT, and a worthy recipient of the prestigious Governor's Medal. Over the past few years I've had the privilege of meeting with hundreds of healthcare leaders across many dozens of the nation's leading health systems, and it has been informative to me to see just how many of them, in one way or another, have been positively impacted by Larry's decades of service. This award is a mark worthy of a lifetime of accomplishment from a man who is also one of the most humble, likeable, and remarkable individuals I've ever known."

The Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) and the State Science Office award medals to science and technology leaders who have improved the lives of people in the state and nation through their research and/or years of service. The Governor's Medal award program was initiated in 1987.
