Herbalife Calls Bill Ackman Comments 'A Tirade'

Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE: HLF) on Wednesday called the latest comments by activist investor Bill Ackman a single-purpose "tirade" intended to drive down its share price.

Ackman built up a huge short position in the multi-level marketer starting in 2012 and has been on a colorful campaign to discredit the company, which he has characterized as a "ponzi scheme."

On Wednesday, Ackman likened Herbalife to Wall Street fraudster Bernie Madoff during an interview on CNBC.

"Bill Ackman is entirely predictable - with his Herbalife put options expiring next week, he is off on yet another tirade of misrepresentations," Herbalife said Wednesday.

Since Monday, Herbalife shares are down more than 15 percent, although in Thursday's pre-market session were ticking higher.

The New York Post reported market speculation Wednesday that 8 percent stake holder William Stiritz has been rapidly unwinding his 7.5 million shares of Herbalife.
