Q: I've a tendency to work non-stop, it's just who I am. My wife encourages me to relax more, but I find that stressful. Relaxation makes me feel lazy, so why force myself to do it?

A: Your wife is right, you are wrong.

Going full throttle one hundred percent of the time is not sustainable and will eventually result in less productivity. Relaxing is not a waste of time, it is the necessary way a body and mind refuels itself. You must learn to carve out time in your schedule...this is not a luxury, it's a necessity. Decompressing is vital to preventing burn-out. Relaxing will actually improve your work stamina.

Even though you identify as a workaholic, you can learn to embrace downtime activities.

There isn't a set prescription on how to relax, it's a very individual choice.

Suggestions include:

  • sports
  • -favorite hobbies
  • exercise
  • massage
  • meditation/yoga
  • outdoor activities
  • swimming
  • boating
  • cooking
  • reading/book clubs
  • weekend getaways
  • vacations

...And the list goes on!

Your wife sees the impact non-stop work has had on you, even if you can't. Have confidence that she is steering you in the right direction by looking out for your health and productivity. She's obviously invested in your health and success.

Accepting the value of relaxation will encourage you to engage in it.
