TWST: Could you please start with a brief history and overview of the firm?
Mr. Thompson: Our firm was founded in 2003 by myself and business partner Mario Vachon. We both came out of two successful Canadian asset management firms, one being Phillips, Hager and North, and the other being Bissett Investment Management, both of which were subsequently sold to larger institutions. We established ourselves 11 years ago with a goal to offer very private customized development of segregated Canadian equity portfolios for high-net-worth individuals primarily in Western Canada.
We have had a specialization in the small and midcap end of the market, although our portfolios typically hold securities across all market cap ranges. We have sustained excellent performance consistently over a number of years, with the small-cap space providing the main impetus for outperformance.
TWST: Please give us a closer look at your guiding investment principles, strategies and evaluation techniques.
Mr. Thompson: Fundamentally we are a company that looks for basic moderate p/e multiples on our investments, and are very attracted to organizations that have substantial free cash flow and contractual recurring revenue streams; companies that have natural recurring revenue streams as opposed to revenue streams that are generated on one-off transactions. We unearth numerous small-cap investments that provide healthy dividends despite a higher risk profile.
