Housing data, bank earnings due

Banks and housing are the main themes on today's calendar.

Goldman Sachs and Citigroup lead the pre-market earnings lineup. Other significant names issuing results include Blackstone, KeyCorp, UnitedHealth, Philip Morris, and Sherwin Williams.

On the economic front, housing starts, building permits, and initial jobless claims are all due at 8:30 a.m. ET. Starts are expected to climb to an annualized pace of 1.04 million for March, compared with the previous month's 897,000 reading.

Permits are forecast at 1.08 million versus 1.1 million in February.

Economists see jobless claims coming in at 280,000, down slightly from 281,000 one week earlier.

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve's regional activity index for April follows at 10 a.m. ET. It is expected to climb to 6.3 from 5 in March. Natural-gas inventories round out the calendar at 10:30 a.m. ET.

The post-market earnings lineup includes American Express, Mattel, Schlumberger, and Ulta Salon.

Friday's agenda includes results from General Electric, Honeywell, and Seagate Technology. Inflation numbers are due on both sides of the Atlantic, and the University of Michigan releases its consumer-sentiment index.
