BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) -- As some European countries phase out their reliance on nuclear energy, Hungary says it hopes to produce even more electricity at its nuclear plant.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Thursday the goal is to have nuclear power provide 60 percent of the country's electricity needs, compared with around 40 percent now.
Hungary's only nuclear power plant is located in the south-central city of Paks and has four Soviet-made reactors.
Orban spoke after a meeting with his Czech counterpart, Petr Necas. The Czech Republic's six nuclear reactors produce a third of its electricity and the government plans to at least double that output over the next 50 years.
Germany and Switzerland are phasing out nuclear energy, while in Eastern Europe its use is growing.
