NEW YORK & NEWARK, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) today announced a $25,000 grant from The Sallie Mae Fund, a charitable organization sponsored by Sallie Mae. The grant will help fund the nonprofit organization’s education programs that support veterans and their families.

“During the government shutdown, demand for IAVA’s educational resources increased significantly. Educational assistance is a critical service that IAVA is proud to provide to veterans and their families,” said IAVA’s Chief of Staff, Derek Bennett. “We thank The Sallie Mae Fund for this generous grant to help us continue our work to ensure that vets can access educational benefits that are so vital to a successful transition.”

With hundreds of thousands of new veterans headed back to school under the New GI Bill, IAVA provides them the tools and support needed to make informed decisions. The Rapid Response Referral Program (RRRP) is a successful case management and referral services initiative. It connects veterans with qualified case managers and with best-in-class resources in education, as well as the areas of employment, health and mental health, public benefits, housing and legal assistance.

The grant award from The Sallie Mae Fund will also help sponsor NewGIBill.org, IAVA’s comprehensive online guide to help veterans understand and access their GI Bill benefits. More than 560,000 veterans have already visited NewGIBill.org and used the New GI Bill calculator to estimate their benefits and get one-on-one support from experts on staff.

“The Sallie Mae Fund is honored to support IAVA’s education programs and mission to improve the lives of veterans,” said Mike Maier, senior vice president, Sallie Mae, and U.S. Navy veteran. “On this Veterans Day, we pay tribute to the military and call attention to the needs of the men and women who serve our country. This grant will help ensure that educational resources and opportunities are provided to our veterans.”

Since 2001, The Sallie Mae Fund has contributed more than $125 million to increase access to higher education and support local communities.
