Ikanos Demonstrates 300Mbps Throughput at 200 Meters on a Single-Pair Copper Line, Further Raising the VDSL Rate-Reach Performance Bar

Ikanos Existing High-Performance Chipsets Enable Fiber-to-the-Distribution-Point (FTTdp) Deployments, Using Existing Copper Infrastructure to Complement Carriers' Fiber Networks

FREMONT, CA--(Marketwired - Jul 25, 2013) - Ikanos Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: IKAN), a leading provider of advanced broadband semiconductor and software products for the digital home, today reported that it has once again raised the bar on VDSL rate-reach performance by achieving an aggregate throughput of 300Mbps over a standard single-pair copper cable up to a distance of 200 meters (short-loop) using its existing VDSL chipsets. This demonstration follows the recent successful completion of multiple top-tier OEM and carrier lab trials in which the company's Velocity-3 central-office (CO) chipset has been given high marks for achieving 150Mbps aggregate throughput (110Mbps downstream and 40Mbps upstream) at a distance of 500 meters in a 192-port reference DSLAM system. This new short-loop demonstration further extends Ikanos' industry leadership in rate-reach performance, offering carriers best-in-class VDSL technology covering a wide range of distances. As a significant step towards G.Fast, Ikanos' fiber-to-the-distribution-point (FTTdp) solution leverages the company's current chipset to offer industry-leading short-loop performance, thereby creating an immediate opportunity for carriers to enhance their broadband service offering, and better compete against the MSOs.

The significance of this high-throughput, short-loop performance is most visible in FTTdp deployments. In a notable percentage of certain carrier's fiber deployments, the carrier is unable to reach all the way inside a subscriber's residence, typically because the home or building owner does not allow the construction required to lay the additional fiber. In these situations, often the most economical option is to cover the remaining distance (typically 100-200m) using the existing copper infrastructure. For such fiber deployments in which gigabit broadband connectivity is the desired outcome, carriers are looking for technologies that maximize the performance on copper lines and achieve as close a throughput to fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) as possible. This is where Ikanos' performance leadership and demonstration of 300Mbps aggregate throughput at 200 meters -- or even higher bandwidth at shorter distances -- have attracted carriers' interest globally.

"Ikanos has a history of challenging the industry by pushing the performance envelope and continuing to raise the bar on our competition," said Kourosh Amiri, vice president of marketing at Ikanos. "With Velocity-3, in a matter of a few months, we have received widespread recognition of our industry leadership in performance and scalability for high-port-count deployments of 192 lines (scalable up to 384), at distances reaching 500 meters and beyond. While the G.Fast promise of gigabit performance is still on the horizon, our ability to demonstrate hundreds of megabits for lower-port-count short-loop configurations using our currently shipping CPE and CO silicon establishes Ikanos as the leader in the 'pre-G.Fast' era, as we enable telcos to remain competitive against mounting pressure from MSOs and continue to enhance the consumer DSL broadband experience."

The 300Mbps aggregate throughput has been demonstrated on Ikanos' industry-leading Vx185 family of communication processors for CPE with Fusiv™ architecture. Multiple CO configurations will be offered ranging from single-port up to 192 ports. To inquire about Ikanos' FTTdp solutions or schedule a demonstration, please contact Ikanos at www.ikanos.com.
