Total option volume just tops 5.4 million contracts on what feels like a very slow day, as much of the volume is concentrated in the biggest indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

More than 1.1 million options have traded in the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY), led by 707,000 puts. Next up are the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (:EEM) options at 323,000, with puts outpacing calls by 2 to 1. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options have turned over 280,000 times, with 175,000 puts.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 174,000 contracts changing hands, with 112,000 puts. Just behind are the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) at 172,000 options, 111,000 of which are calls.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 156,000 options moving, with 95,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) is the only other name to break 100,000 as it sees 119,000 contracts trade, with calls slightly outpacing puts. The SPRD Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 89,000 options traded, also with calls slightly outnumbering puts.
