Option volume is again relatively strong today with 6.1 million contracts traded so far, with some big positions in major indexes and ETFs leading the way, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 (:SPY) options have traded 943,000 times, with 582,000 puts. Next up are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options at 423,000, with calls outpacing puts by 3 to 1. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) contracts follow at 273,000, with 170,000 puts.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has seen 186,000 options change hands, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) is having another big day with volume of 146,000, led by 92,000 puts.
The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) has 113,000 options turning over, with 67,000 calls. The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) has 106,000 contracts traded, 64,000 of which are puts. And the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 110,000 options moving, with slightly more calls than puts.
