Index, ETF option volumes near midday

Total option volume tops 5.7 million contracts as the typical name top the action in indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has seen 765,000 options trade, with 461,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 179,000 contracts changing hands, led by 124,000 calls. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options are just behind with 176,000 as calls slightly outpacing puts again today.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) options have turned over 166,000 times, also with more calls than puts. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has volume of 152,000, though in this name the put/call ratio is almost 4 to 1.

The iShares Silver Fund (SLV) has 135,000 contracts traded, with 83,000 calls. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX) has 115,000 options changing hands, with 85,000 calls.

Just behind are the SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) options at 112,000, dominated by 102,000 calls. The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has seen 101,000 move, with calls just outpacing puts.
