Calls are very active in the indexes and ETFs as total option volume hits 4.7 million contracts so far today, optionMONSTER's data systems show.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) leads the way as usual with 950,000 contracts, as puts slightly outnumber calls. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options have traded 242,000 times, dominated by 200,000 calls.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 190,000 options changing hands, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has seen 177,000 trade, with calls leading puts by a small margin. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 135,000 contracts turning over, including 82,000 puts.
The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX) has 63,000 options traded, of which 35,000 are puts. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) is seeing 55,000 contracts change hands, 27,000 of them calls.
