Total option volume is relatively strong at 6.8 million options so far today, with bullish sentiment coming through in the major indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER's data systems show.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 733,000 options traded, with 432,000 puts. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) contracts have turned over 302,000 times, with 157,000 calls--a very rare occasion when calls outpace puts in this index.
Just shy of 200,000 options have traded in the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM), with 155,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 190,000 options traded, with 98,000 puts. That too is quite rare to have puts outpace calls in the VIX. Just behind are the options of the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) at 186,000 contracts, with puts outpacing calls by almost 2 to 1.
The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 143,000 contracts moving, led by 100,000 puts. Following closely are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) options at 136,000, evenly split between calls and puts.
