Overall option volume is light again today with just 4.2 million contracts so far, and hedging against to be the name of the game in the indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER's data systems show.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 616,000 options traded, 395,000 of which are puts. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options have turned over 203,000 times with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 146,000 changing hands, and just behind are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) options with 134,000. Both also have put/call ratios of roughly 2 to 1.
The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 133,000 contracts trading, led by 85,000 calls. Right behind are the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) options with 130,000, dominated by 104,000 puts.
The iShares China 25 Index Fund (FXI) is seeing 57,000 options turn over, with 40,000 calls. And the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Fund (VXX) has 48,000 options traded, with slightly more calls than puts.
