Total option volume is a huge at 11.3 million contracts so far today, led by the usual indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
More than 2.3 million SPDR S&P 500 (:SPY) options have traded already, with 1.5 million puts. Next up are the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) options at 584,000, dominated by 495,000 puts. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) contracts follow at 469,000, with 300,000 puts.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 380,000 options changing hands, with a put/call ratio of almost 4 to 1. Just behind is the CBOE Volatility index (:VIX) with 376,000 contracts, led by 215,000 calls. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) has volume of 318,000, with 174,000 calls.
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has seen 288,000 options turn over, with 160,000 puts. The SPDR Financial Fund (:XLF) has 272,000 trading as puts outpace calls by 5 to 1. (See related story )
The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 240,000 options traded, with 148,000 puts.
