Activity in the indexes and ETFs dominates today's option trading as 5.5 million total contracts have changed hands so far, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.
In its usual place at the top of the volume list is the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY), which sees 640,000 contracts trade, with 390,000 puts. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 319,000, with 191,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has seen 220,000 contracts change hands, with calls outpacing puts by 3 to 1.
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 146,000 contracts moving. Following are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) options with 124,000. Both have a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.
The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 66,000 options turning over, led by 45,000 calls. The iShares China 25 Index Fund (FXI) and the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX) both have 50,000 contracts traded, and both see slightly more calls than puts.
