Index, ETF option volumes near midday


The total option volume is relatively light at 5 million contracts so far today, as the index and ETF activity is mixed, optionMONSTER's data systems show.

The Bank of America is first on the list with 563,000 contracts. The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (NYSEArca:SPY) comes in second today with 481,000 contracts traded, 343,000 of them puts.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is the top index name with 139,000 options traded, including 91,000 puts. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (NYSEArca:IWM) has seen 162,000 options turn over, evenly split between calls and puts.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (NasdaqGM:QQQ) has 142,000 contracts, with 87,000 puts. The S&P 500 Index (NasdaqGS:SPX) options have changed hands 112,000 times.

The SPDR Financial Fund (NYSEArca:XLF) has 98,000 options trading, 85,000 of which are calls. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (NYSEArca:VXX) options total 89,000.
