Index, ETF option volumes near midday

Total option volume is strong today with more than 8.1 million contracts already traded as sentiment is relatively bullish in the major indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.

Almost 2 million options have changed hands in the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY), with puts slightly outpacing calls. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 550,000, evenly split between calls and puts.

Following are the SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) options at 257,000, with calls outpacing puts about 6 to 1. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 222,000 contracts turning over, led by 177,000 calls. Just behind are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) options at 202,000, with 127,000 puts.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has seen 165,000 options move, 98,000 of which are puts. The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 126,000 contracts traded, with 68,000 calls.
