Total option volume tops 5.1 million contracts so far today as the typical names top the index and ETF activity, optionMONSTER's data systems show.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 711,000 options traded, led by 452,000 puts. Next up on the volume list are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 304,000, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.
The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 121,000 contracts changing hands, 74,000 of which are calls. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has seen 107,000 contracts turn over, with puts outpacing calls by more than 2 to 1. Not far behind are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) contracts at 96,000, evenly split between calls and puts.
The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) has 80,000 options trading, with slightly more puts than calls. Just behind are the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) options at 79,000, 51,000 of which are puts. The SPDR Retail Fund (XRT) has seen 64,000 options change hands, domainated by 61,000 puts.
