Total option volume is light at just 4.6 million contracts so far today, with markedly bearish sentiment in major ETFs and indexes, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 596,000 options traded, with puts outpacing calls by more than 2 to 1. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) contracts at 278,000, also with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options have turn over 221,000 times, dominated by 182,000 calls.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 168,000 contracts changing hands, led by 108,000 puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has seen 110,000 option trade, with 60,000 puts. The iPath S&P 50) VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) has volume of 87,000 options, 51,000 of which are calls.
