Total option volume is closing in on 6 million contracts so far today, with mixed action in the major indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 768,000 options traded, led by 445,000 puts. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) contracts at 401,000, with 235,000 puts. The iShares EAFE Index Fund (EFA) options have changed hands 266,000 times, with 262,000 puts dominating the volume.
Not far behind are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options at 234,000, with calls outnumbering puts by almost 2 to 1. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 215,000 contracts moving, but with more 131,000 puts outpacing calls.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has seen 138,000 options trade, with a put/call ratio of 3 to 1. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 90,000 contracts turning over, with slightly more puts than calls.
