In a highly unusual event, the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) is second in volume behind Facebook. The SPY has 423,000 options traded, with 270,000 puts. Next up are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) options at just 167,000, with puts outpacing calls by more than 2 to 1.
The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) is next up with volume of 98,000 contracts, 53,000 of which are puts. Just behind are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) at 97,000, with 52,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 92,000 contracts changing hands, with 56,000 calls.
The iShares US Real Estate Fund (IYR) has 81,000 options turning over, with 75,000 puts. And the SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) has 74,000 options traded, with puts slightly outpacing calls.
