Total option volume is light again today at 4.2 million contracts, with most of the action coming from the typical indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER data systems show.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 561,000 options traded, with 348,000 puts. Next up are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) options with 270,000 and puts outpacing calls by 2 to 1.
The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) contracts have turned over 138,000 times, with 83,000 puts. The iShares Silver Fund (SLV) has 103,000 options traded, led by 73,000 calls. Just behind are the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) with volume of 97,000 and a put/call ratio of more than 2 to 1.
The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has seen 91,000 options move, with calls slightly outnumbering puts. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 81,000 contracts changing hands, evenly split between calls and puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) comes in the same total, with 47,000 puts.
