Total option volume just tops 6 million contracts so far today, with bearish sentiment in the major indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 811,000 options traded, with puts outpacing calls by more than 2 to 1. Next up is the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) with 517,000 options, dominated by 505,000 puts. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has seen 367,000 options turn over, with a put/call ratio of 6 to 1.
The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has 205,000 contracts changing hands, evenly split between calls and puts. The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) has 170,000 options move, led by 150,000 puts.
The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 150,000 contracts turning over, 85,000 of which are calls. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 117,000 options traded, with 75,000 puts. Just 71,000 options have traded in the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX), with calls slightly outpacing puts.
