More than 6.4 million options have traded so far today as commodities make an appearance near the top of the index and ETF volume, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) takes its usual place at the top of the list with 815,000 contracts, led by 547,000 puts. Next up is the SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) at 391,000 options, with 221,000 puts.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 296,000 contracts changing hands, with puts outpacing calls by more than 3 to 1. Just behind are the iShares Silver Fund (SLV) options at 282,000, with 147,000 puts.
The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has seen 221,000 options trade. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX), which is derived from those SPX options, has 186,000 of its own contracts trading. In both cases, puts barely outpace calls.
Following closely are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) options at 180,000, with a put/call ratio of almost 5 to 1. The Market Vector Gold Miners Fund (:GDX) is also high on the volume list with 114,000 options as calls just outnumber puts.
