Total option volume is back to average with about 5.6 million contracts trading so far today, while action is mixed in the major indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 580,000 options trading, with 361,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 328,000 contracts changing hands as calls slightly outpace puts. Just behind are the iShares Emerging Markets (EEM) options at 319,000, dominated by 284,000 puts. (See related story )
The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options have turned over 176,000 times, with a put/call ratio of more than 2 to 1. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 140,000 contracts trading, with 87,000 puts. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has volume of 119,000, with 67,000 puts.
The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has seen 86,000 options trade, led by 52,000 calls. And the SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has traded 66,000 contracts, with slightly more calls than puts.
