The total option volume tops 8.2 million contracts so far today, with the typical index and ETF names leading the action, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
More than 1.2 million options of the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) trade as calls just outpace puts. Next up are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options at 408,000, with 262,000 calls. The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) has seen 331,000 options turn over, dominated by 307,000 puts. (See related story )
Following are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 273,000, with puts slightly outnumbering calls. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 170,000 options traded, exactly evenly split between calls and puts. Just behind are the options of the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) at 163,000, with a put/call ratio of just over 2 to 1.
The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 111,000 contracts changing hands, with 65,000 puts. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) has 103,000 options traded, with 55,000 puts. And the iShares Silver Fund (SLV) has 101,000 options traded, evenly split between calls and puts. (See related story )
