Total option volume is closing in on 5.8 million contracts so far today, with mixed action in the major indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 709,000 options traded, with 456,000 puts. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 325,000, puts outpacing calls by more than 2 to 1. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) follows with volume of 215,000 as calls slightly outnumber puts.
The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 170,000 contracts changing hands, with calls outpacing puts by 3 to 1. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has seen 137,000 options trade, with 86,000 puts.
Next up are the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) with 91,000 options, evenly split between calls and puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 77,000 options turning over, with slightly more puts than calls.
