Index, ETF option volumes near midday


Total option volume tops 5.3 million contracts so far today, with mixed action in the indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER's data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (NYSEArca:SPY) has 739,000 options traded, puts outpacing calls more than 2-1.

The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (NYSEArca:EEM) is next up with 301,000, well above average, with 181,000 puts changing hands. Just behind is the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (NYSEArca:IWM) with 275,000 options, 198,000 of which are puts.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (NasdaqGM:QQQ) has 190,000 options moving, as puts outpace calls. The S&P 500 Index (SPX) options haved turned over 155,000 times and also has a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.

The iShares Silver Fund (NYSEArca:SLV) has seen 118,000 contracts trade, with 78,000 calls. The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (NYSEArca:GLD) has 88,000 changing hands, 60,000 of which are calls.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) has 74,000 options traded, evenly split between calls and puts.
