Index, ETF option volumes near midday

Total option volume is picking up today as 5.9 million contracts have traded so far, with mixed action in the indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER's data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 773,000 options traded, led by 451,000 puts. Next up are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) contracts at 271,000, with puts outpacing calls by 12 to 1. Following closely is the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) with 249,000 options and a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.

The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 123,000 options traded, with 86,000 calls. Just behind are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) options at 116,000, with 62,000 calls. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has seen 108,000 contracts change hands, with 61,000 puts.

The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 101,000 options turning over, with 61,000 calls. And the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) just breaks the 100,000 mark with 62,000 calls.
