Total option volume is closing in on 6 million contracts so far today, with major indexes and ETFs topping the action, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 1.4 million options traded, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1. Next up is the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) at volume of 294,000, dominated by 240,000 puts. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 193,000 contracts changing hands, with 120,000 puts.
The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has seen 131,000 options turn over, with calls out pacing puts by 2 to 1. Just behind are the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) options with 130,000 options, including 75,000 calls.
The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has 121,000 contracts trading, led by 83,000 puts. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (:EEM) has 60,000 options moving, with calls just outpacing puts.
