Total option volume is at 5.8 million contracts so far today, dominated by action in the major indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) tops the action as usual, today with 745,000 contracts traded as puts barely outpace calls. Next up are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options at 391,000, with 210,000 calls. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options have traded 265,000 contracts, with 156,000 puts.
The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has seen 196,000 options change hands, with calls outpacing puts by 3 to 1. The SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) has 101,000 contracts turning over, with calls outnumbering puts by 2 to 1.
The iShares MSCI Japan Fund (EWJ) has 82,000 options moving, with fewer than 500 puts. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) also has volume of 82,000 but is led by 55,000 puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 69,000 options traded, with puts just outpacing calls.
