Total option volume is 5.5 million contracts so far today, with mixed action in the major indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has just 431,000 contracts traded, with 275,000 puts. Next up is the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) with 280,000 options, 170,000 of which are puts. Just behind are the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) options at 266,000, led by 217,000 calls.
The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 172,000 contracts changing hands, with slightly more calls than puts. The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) just tops 100,000, dominated by 95,000 puts.
Following closely are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) options at 96,000 evenly split between calls and puts. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 88,000 options traded, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.
