Total option volume just tops 5 million contracts so far today, with mixed sentiment in the leading indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.
Almost 624,000 SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) options have traded, putting it just behind Apple's 642,000 contracts on the high-volume list. For the SPY, puts are outpacing calls by almost 2 to 1. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options have 158,000 contracts changing hands, with 96,000 puts.
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 140,000 options traded, with 80,000 calls outnumbering puts. Just behind are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) contracts at 134,000, dominated by 100,000 puts. The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 107,000 traded, with 58,000 calls.
The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has seen 93,000 contracts change hands, 58,000 of which are calls. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options have traded 81,000 times, with 47,000 calls.
