Total option volume is strong today with 8.5 million contracts changing hands so far, led by action in the major indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER's data systems show.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 1.4 million options traded, with 810,000 puts. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 475,000 with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.
More than 317,000 CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options have turned over, with calls just outpacing puts. Just behind are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) contracts at 312,000, led by 235,000 puts.
Following are the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) options at 282,000, with 200,000 calls. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 264,000 contracts traded, with calls just outnumbering puts. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX) has 217,000 options moving, with 137,000 puts.
