Option volume is strong with 6.5 million contracts so far, as seemingly bearish sentiment permeates the index and ETF activity, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (NYSEArca:SPY) has 815,000 options traded with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1. The S&P 500 Index (SPX) has seen 196,000 contracts change hands, also with a 2-to-1 put/call ratio. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (NYSEArca:IWM) regains its place near the top of the volume list with 169,000 options, 133,000 of which are puts.
The SPDR Gold Fund (NYSEArca:GLD) is just behind with 167,000 contracts. Here the calls outpace puts by 2 to 1.
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (NasdaqGM:QQQ) is up next with 163,000 options, including 124,000 puts. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (NYSEArca:EEM) has 123,000 options traded.
The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) options just topped 100,000, with calls outpacing puts roughly 2 to 1. The SPDR Financial Fund (NYSEArca:XLF) has 93,000 contracts turning over, also with a 2-to-1 put/call ratio.
The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Fund (NYSEArca:VXX) has 78,000 contracts, 51,000 of them puts. The iShares Silver Fund (NYSEArca:SLV) has 69,000 options changing hands.
