Total option volume has fallen off today as only 4.8 million contracts have traded so far, with action led by the typical indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER's data systems show.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 789,000 contracts trading, with 511,000 puts. Next up are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options at 235,000, with calls slightly outpacing puts.
The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options have turned over 176,000 times, with puts outpacing calls by more than 2 to 1. Just behind are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM), also with 176,000 contracts, with 128,000 puts.
The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) has 123,000 contracts changing hands, with 65,000 puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 113,000 options traded, with 70,000 calls.
