Total option volume is at 5.3 million contracts so far today as activity in the indexes and ETFs continue their trend from last week, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (NYSEArca:SPY) sees 534,000 options traded, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (NYSEArca:IWM) has 238,000 contracts changing hands, 197,000 of which are puts. Just behind is the PowerShares QQQ Trust (NasdaqGM:QQQ) with 220,000 options, also with a 2-to-1 put/call ratio.
The S&P 500 Index (SPX) has seen 122,000 options turn over, followed closely by the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) with 115,000. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (NYSEArca:EEM) options have changed hands 115,000 times, with more puts than calls.
The SPDR Gold Fund (NYSEArca:GLD) has 79,000 contracts changing hands, while the iShares Silver Fund (NYSEArca:SLV) has 52,000 options traded. Here we see the commodity trend continue as more calls trade than puts in both funds.
The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Fund (NYSEArca:VXX) has 47,000 contracts moving, 25,000 of which are puts.
