Total option volume is closing in on 5.9 million contracts today, with mixed action in the major indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 806,000 options traded, with 464,000 puts. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 192,000 contracts changing hands, 115,000 of which are puts.
Next up are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) with volume of 169,000, led by 100,000 calls. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has seen 139,000 options turn over, with 96,000 puts.
The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 95,000 contracts trading, 55,000 of which are puts. And the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options have traded 78,000 times, with calls outpacing puts by 2 to 1.
