Total option volume sits at 5.1 million contracts so far today as put trading leads the action in most top indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 732,000 options traded, with puts outpacing calls by more than than 2 to 1. Next up are the SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) options at 303,000, dominated by 251,000 puts.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 193,000 options traded, with a put/call ratio of better than 6 to 1. Just behind are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) contracts at 191,000, though in this name calls are slightly outpacing puts. Following closely are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 183,000, with a put/call ratio of greater than 2 to 1.
The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 103,000 contracts changing hands, with slightly more puts than calls. Just over 100,000 iShares Brazil Fund (EWZ) options have traded, also with a slight edge in puts. And the iShares Silver Fund (SLV) has seen 75,000 options turn over, led by 44,000 calls.
