Indiana State University seeks to enroll school-record 14,000 students by 2017

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) -- Indiana State University wants to enroll 14,000 students by 2017, which would give the school its most students ever.

The biggest enrollment the Terre Haute school has ever had was 13,533 in 1970. The school had 12,114 to start the current semester, surpassing the 12,000-student goal two years ahead of schedule.

University officials say plans call for the school to reach the 14,000-student goal by adding more than 1,000 undergraduates and more than 800 graduate students during the next five years. More than half of that growth would come from boosting the number of students completing degrees online.

Indiana State also is seeking to increase its four-year graduation rate from just more than 22 percent to 30 percent in five years.
